Northern Studies/Dene Village Portfolio
Dene Village is where the Canadian Government "resettled" the nomadic Sayisi Dene of northeastern Manitoba in 1967. Within 15 years of being resettled, nearly one third of the population was wiped out, due to the social collapse brought on by relocation. The eleven works included in this portfolio are images of prints found by the artist in the abandoned village as part of a bundle of around 200 8x10 glossy pornographic c-prints. The images were meticulously wrapped in several plastic bags to protect them, and hidden in the boggy, forested area where only the concrete foundations of the village lay. Over time, water and the freeze-thaw cycle finally had their way, reducing the images to the barely visible cyan hues pictured. The artist re-photographed the prints on location with a large-format camera then placed them back where he found them.
