Over the course of several years Justin Newhall traced the Lewis and Clark Trail through the Dakotas, Montana, and beyond. His series presents a lyrical exploration of the discovery, speculation, and exploitation that have shaped our treatment of the land, focusing on the hyperboles of tourism as well as the way in which we incorporate history and mythology into the landscape. In 2006 a monograph of the work was published as part of a three volume set by Aperture (NY) in conjunction with The Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago).
